For a nation of 4 million people, Ireland’s international reputation is extraordinary. The Arann Islands have been the subject of much literature, and even the Stony Grey Soil of Monaghan warranted a poem, in the eyes of Patrick Kavanagh. With the oldest national theatre in the world, Dublin can truly be called one of the cultural capitals of Europe. The international reputation of Ireland’s education system has also grown significantly in recent years. Ireland’s secondary school curriculum is considered to be one of the best in the world and gives the international student a sound base from which to study anywhere. The final examination on the Irish curriculum, the Leaving Certificate, is internationally recognised and can be fully con-validated.  Ireland has a wide variety of schooling options, from state schools to private international institutions. Examinable subject choice is wide and varied, ranging from the core subjects of English and maths to, depending on the educational facility, Classical studies and even engineering.
